Or lack there of...


So I'm a bit peeved at a certain professor at my college right now. For 2 weeks he has dropped form one of my favorite professors to my least favorite. He's in charge of my drawing class.

The fact that I don;t like my drawing professor is a problem.

So first he is incapable of accepting my final project because he wants something other than a drawing for a drawing class final... Then he tells me I should change my major from animation to graphic designer. Now he doesn't even acknowledge a piece I worked on for almost 14 hours straight.

I managed to twist my final project idea into something he likes. I dismiss his attempt at changing my future when I've bee planning on being an animator for years. But the fact that I work extremely hard on a LIFE-SIZED SELF-PORTRAIT and it is only hung up for 2 minutes without receiving any comments form the teacher or students (except for too that said they liked it) REALLY pisses me off.

I already don't like self-portraits... let alone huge ones. However, I managed to tap into a pool of success and created a marvelous life-sized self-portrait. I actually ended up having fun. It came out just as I envisioned it and I am extremely proud of it. It is the first self-portrait to truly be recognizable by as me, despite the fact that my eyes are behind thick goggles. I literally worked for 14 hours on this thing; 11 of those hours consecutively, and then I had to go eat breakfast and take a power name of 2 hours (I pulled an all-nighter), then work on the picture for another 3 before class started. I was beyond excited to show my work in class.

But what happens?

I have to wait 5 hours to hang up my piece. It was literally on the wall for 2 minutes. During which it got NO attention from my professor. I can honestly say I had one of the better self-portraits in the class. Most of the students half-assed their work. The only pieces that get praised are two charcoal drawings of two male students in basically the same pose. Then there were 2 other pieces that got labeled "not-so-hot." Some others just got nods of approval or "nice work." I got nothing. Not even a glance. Then we are instructed to take down are pieces and turn them in.

I went up to the teacher because this was bull-crap. I asked if we would get a more in-depth critique next week. He said yes that's why he collected him so he can look them over and give individual critiques. then he goes on to say "Your self-portrait was very stylized. I have a few ideas of what inspired you."

I respond with an "O rly?"

And he says, "It looks like anime." He also says it had the style of some japanese illustrator I had never heard of.

The fact that I have NEVER shown him any of my anime drawings; and the only thing he knows about me is that I want to be an animator. So on that alone he assumes I always try to make things look anime-esk? WRONG. I have quite a bit of realistic work now. But more importantly... my self-portrait was NOT inspired by anime and did not even have an anime look to it! The REALLY pissed me off.

To add to my frustration: I didn't even get to take a photo of this thing! One of my best works and I don't have proof it exists until it is released form my professors office.


So Deviants. This was not the purpose of this Journal, but while I'm on the topic... I always select "Critique Requested" or "Critique Encouraged" or whatever it's called now for a reason. I like to be constantly improving myself. So please, feel free to actually critique. I will always appreciated the "nice job" comments. Always. But please, please, take advantage of the desire for critique.
